This is an older video, and I am sure that deck installations were more affordable in 2016. I was literally shocked when I got estimates recently on the cost of rebuilding my deck. There is a point when it is just no longer afforadable for the average homeowner. I think that time has come. I am tempted to call West Coast Decks for an estimate, since they are in my area, but would their pricing be more inline with my budget? I doubt it. Could I build it myself and have a quality product while saving money? Good question.

Their webpage says to use galvanized nails. Don't use galvanized with Cedar. You will eventually get black lines from the nail heads due to the reaction of the oils in the cedar and the nails. You need to use stainless steel nails every time with cedar.

It's awesome to find all-natural alternatives that are resistant to rot and bugs. We've got plenty of juniper options here at Levi's Sawmill that are perfect for DIY projects just like this one. If you're not a seasoned carpenter a "Sawzall" is a dangerous tool to use on a ladder because it can bind/kick. Once you're comfortable with the ladder use a good new blade and for this job, install it upside down!!!
